Conference

The 11th meeting of the World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves (WNICBR) will be held at Kingfisher Bay Resort K’gari from the 3rd -8th September 2023.

The Network was launched in 2009 through the UNESCO MAB Program to foster sustainable development in islands and coastal areas and to promote adaptation and mitigation strategies on climate change.

K’gari and The Great Sandy Biosphere, located in south-east Queensland, Australia, is renowned for its cultural and ecological significance. Protecting its vast history and unique environments has been a key priority for the Traditional Owners in the region. As such, the theme for the event is “We are all Connected”, and there will be a focus on placing the rights and interests of First Nations Peoples at the forefront of nature conservation.

Visitors from around the world will be attending the invitation-only conference.

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we live and work and pay our respects to their Ancestors and their descendants, who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We also respect the history and culture of the Traditional Owners and their ongoing connection to land and sharing of knowledge.
